What's Really Behind Our Conflicts?
What's Really Behind Our Conflicts?
Recognizing and Overcoming Our Inner Struggles
"What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don't they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don't have what you want because you don't ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure."
Have you ever wondered why conflicts and arguments arise so often, even with people we care deeply about? The book of James offers us profound insight—our external conflicts originate from internal battles. Within each of us, there's a struggle between selfish desires and the Spirit of God. When our own desires dominate, it inevitably spills over into our relationships, causing quarrels and tension.
James challenges us to examine the true motivations behind our actions. Are we driven primarily by selfish desires that serve only our own interests, or are we genuinely seeking to honor God and serve others? God desires that our motivations be pure, driven by love and selflessness, not selfish ambition.
Consider Jesus—no matter the external circumstances He faced, He consistently walked in the Spirit. Nothing external could ever distract Him from His true purpose of glorifying God and serving others. How can we, too, cultivate a steadfast heart, ensuring that our actions always align with God's will rather than our momentary desires?
- Evaluate Together: Reflect as a family on recent conflicts or disagreements. Talk openly about the internal feelings or desires that may have contributed.
- Daily Practice: Each day, consciously ask yourselves: "Is what I'm pursuing today benefiting only me, or is it pleasing to God and serving others?"
- Set an Example: Encourage one another by highlighting examples of selfless behavior and celebrating when family members put others first.
Heavenly Father, we confess that too often our conflicts arise from our own selfish desires. Forgive us for seeking our own gain instead of Your glory and the good of others. Fill us with Your Spirit, helping us to recognize and surrender our inner battles to You. Lead us daily to choose selflessness over selfishness. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
